By Andy Levin, NewtonTAB – Ruthanne Fuller made history Tuesday night, becoming the first woman elected mayor of Newton in a nail-biter victory over Scott Lennon.
Fuller, a city councilor at-large from Ward 7, defeated Lennon, the City Council president, by 344 votes, 12,405 to 12,061.
“I thank the voters of Newton for your trust in me. I pledge to justify that trust by thinking big within our means, by planning the work and working the plan, and by standing up for Newton’s core principles of respect, diversity and acceptance,” Fuller said shortly after results were announced about 9:15 p.m. “And I promise I will never stop listening – or learning. To all the voters of Newton, regardless of which candidates you voted for or whether you were yeah or nay on the charter, we stand together in our common love for this city and I ask for your help, your ideas, and your input. Together, let’s take charge of Newton’s future and now let’s get to work!”
